The awareness that there is a special place in the heart of a boy for the man who plays baseball with him…
These factors spawned the question “is there some way to unite the love for baseball in the Dominican Republic with the testimony of God’s good news of salvation?” In 2006, Baptist Mid-Missions personnel and Dominican pastors together prayerfully pursued God’s answer: a ministry where boys learn both the skills of baseball and the truths of God’s plan of salvation from the Bible.
¡PlayBall! is a perfect fit in the Dominican Republic, where baseball is embraced everywhere: in cities, in towns, in villages. A coach proclaims “we were born to play baseball.” Quality instruction is a valued commodity, and opens the door for significant evangelism. The boys who come to ¡PlayBall! give their full attention to their instructors and listen carefully to the gospel. As they are reached, so are their coaches, parents and siblings. Many have come to personal faith in Jesus Christ. So will many more, as God grows the ministry.

David King serves with Baptist Mid-Missions as a Sports Ministry Coordinator, leading outreach opportunities that combine faith, teamwork, and discipleship. Through sports clinics and mission trips, he helps local churches connect with their communities in meaningful ways—using the love of the game to open doors for the gospel.
From baseball fields in the Dominican Republic to youth programs across the United States, David’s ministry centers on one simple truth: sports can change lives when used for God’s glory. By training leaders, mentoring young athletes, and fostering Christ-centered teamwork, he strives to see lasting transformation in both hearts and communities.

More Information
David has participated in eight ¡Playball! trips since 2014. During the first trip, David knew that he was built for this ministry and started looking for ways to be more involved. In 2022, he discovered that BMM was seeking a long-term missionary to serve as “Sports Ministry Coordinator.” The ministry meant leading ¡PlayBall!, but also developing and leading additional international and domestic sports outreach trips. This ministry focuses on creating high-level sports camps and clinics that could advance current and future church planting efforts.
"David was instantly intrigued. He had long admired missionaries and their work, and here was an opportunity for him, with his unique gifts, to also be a missionary. He considered becoming a career missionary but hesitated due to the impact on his wife’s ministry. As a Physician Assistant, Alyssa had a fruitful ministry at a crisis pregnancy center. Although the Kings felt God was leading David into sports missions, they weren’t sure He wanted Alyssa to leave behind her ministry.
When BMM launched the Global Fit service option in 2023, the Kings’ found the perfect solution. Through Global Fit’s flexibility, David could serve in missions, and Alyssa could maintain her own ministries. The Kings envision creating combined sports/medical missions trips that David, Alyssa, and their kids could take part in. Global Fit has been a win-win for the Kings, effectively doubling their impact for the Lord."
